17 Fat Cattle Show & Sale – 7 Steers & 10 Heifers
A very pleasing entry of fat cattle for our annual Christmas show and sale. There was a terrific exhibition of cattle forward with the steers that weighed from 465kg – 560kg, of which there were 3, averaging a very impressive 200pence per kilo up to £220 pence per kilo for a 475kg Limousin steer from Messrs Price Bros Tyleheulog. The steers weighing over 560kg, of which there were 4, averaged 180 pence per kilo up to 200pence per kilo for a steer weighing 570kg presented from Mr. T. J. Eckley, Talwen Fawr. The overall average to include all weights was 188.5pence per kilo.
The heifers were an even stronger trade with those weighing up to 480kg, of which there were 3, averaging 206.5 pence per kilo up to 230 pence per kilo for a 450kg Limousin heifer from Messrs Price Bros Tyleheulog. The heifers over 480kg averaged a staggering 392 pence per kilo however this does include both the Champion and Reserve Champion beasts.
The show was highly contended with an excellent presentation of cattle forward which made the judging no easy task. The show was kindly judged jointly by two experts in the field, Mr. Brian George of George’s Family Butchers, Talgarth and Mr. Chris Gibbons of Gibbon’s Family Butchers, Hay-on-Wye who carried out a meticulous examination of all those entered in the show and finally gave the overall Championship to Messrs Price Bros Tyleheulog, for a terrific home bred 495kg Limousin heifer. In a very close second place the Reserve Champion was given to a 490kg limousine heifer presented by Mr. T.J. Eckley Talwen Fawr. There was a huge crowd in attendance in the sale ring that was fortunate to witness a record breaking trade. The Champion beast was highly sought after with a final hammer price of an unbelievable £7,500.00, equating to well over £15 per kilo which we suspect may be the highest priced fatstock beast sold this year in the whole of the UK. The beast was purchased by a regular supporter Mr. Stuart Roberts and his son Gareth of HMD Butchers, Swansea who were very pleased with their purchase.
The Reserve Champion was also a top quality beast selling to a fantastic £2500.00, over £5.30 per kilo!! This beast was purchased by our local Talgarth family butcher and judge for the day Mr. Brian George. This was a day for records all round, Mr Graham Baker, auctioneer, who has been with Sunderlands for over 52 years announced that this would be his last year selling at Talgarth’s Christmas fatstock and he was delighted to end his run on such a high and to give the new auctioneer something to aim for!!. Brian George and his family have even a longer standing with Talgarth Livestock Market have bought the champion beast out of Talgarth for 75 years which we believe is a record in itself, and Sunderlands would personally like to thank them for all the support they have given over the years.
